Subsume

subsume: to absorb something into or overshadow something else

Laura Donkers’ exhibition of sound and printed works interweaves human-nature field recordings to critique historical genealogies and dense connotative webs contained in tender 18th century English song lyrics. The works signify the silencing/dismantling of nature’s platform to accentuate the ecosocial and transgenerational impacts of deforestation: the act of re-placing native forests with new colonies of European settlers from the 1900s onwards.

Laura Donkers is a Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland-based socially engaged ecological artist, curator and independent researcher. Her multi-faceted practice engages with liminal spaces such as coastlines, salt marshes and woodlands, and the people who live and work in these places. Artworks take the form of drawings, film poems, digital recordings and public interventions that seek to engage, create impact and inspire action on ecological regeneration.
